Stearic acid (semiluxury or n-octadecanoic acid) CH3(CH2)16COOH — monobasic carboxylic acid of the aliphatic series. White crystals, insoluble in water, soluble in diethyl ether.

Stearic acid was discovered in pork fat in 1816 by a French chemist Shevrole.
Getting
Stearic acid is one of the most common naturally occurring fatty acids, part in the form of glycerides in the composition of lipids, primarily triglycerides (fats) of animal origin, the latter perform the function of the energy depot. Synthesized from palmitic acid by the action of enzymes — elongase responsible for the elongation of aliphatic chain of fatty acids.
The main industrial method of obtaining stearic acid is to extract it from the stearin product of hydrolysis of fats in the manufacture of soap.
Application
Stearic acid (semiluxury or n-octadecanoic acid) is widely used
• for octadecylamide alcohol and octadecylamine are reported;
• in cosmetic industry: sodium stearate is a major component of Soaps, stearic acid itself is a part of many cosmetic products,
• when polishing metals
• in the pharmaceutical industry,
• in the manufacture of candles
• as an emollient in the manufacture of rubber etc.
Stearates of sodium, calcium, lead are used as components of greases.
Esters of Stearic acid are used as components of the adhesive pastes, antioxidants, emulsion for processing textile and leather, monomers for plastics, stabilizers, food etc.
