Monoethylene Glycol (MEG)

Formula: C2H6O2 GOST/CAS: CAS 107-21-1 / ГОСТ 19710-2019

Monoethylene glycol (a dihydric alcohol, ethane-1,2-diol) is a clear, colorless, odorless, and hygroscopic liquid with a slightly syrupy consistency. It is completely miscible with water, alcohols, and acetone. Due to its unique ability to significantly depress the freezing point of aqueous solutions, as well as its properties as an effective solvent and humectant, MEG serves as an indispensable base component in the production of household and industrial detergents, car care products, and heat transfer fluids.

Applications

Car Care & Automotive Chemicals: A fast-acting base component for manufacturing non-freezing windshield washer fluids (antifreezes), de-icers, and winter concentrates. It prevents windshields and wiper blades from icing over.
Household & Industrial Detergents: Used in formulations of liquid detergents and cleaning agents as a consistency stabilizer and an effective solvent for organic soils. It helps couple active ingredients into a homogeneous emulsion.
Specialized Cleaners & Strippers: Included in paint and varnish removers, as well as heavy-duty industrial cleaners designed to remove resins, adhesives, and aged grease or oil deposits from machinery.
HVAC & Industrial Cooling: Functions as the primary base for low-freezing heat transfer fluids (antifreezes) in closed-loop heating, ventilation, and industrial air conditioning systems.

Key Advantages

High Frost Resistance: Effectively lowers the freezing point of water-based solutions (down to -70°C depending on concentration), protecting equipment components and automotive systems from freeze-cracking.
Excellent Solvency: Readily blends with water and surfactants, assisting in the dissolution of complex oil, grease, and organic soils that cannot be washed away by water alone.
Formulation Stabilization: Acts as an efficient co-solvent and hydrotrope, preventing phase separation or settling of liquid detergents during storage and under temperature fluctuations.
Optimal Viscosity: Imparts proper flowability to finished products, improving the wetting capability on treated surfaces.

Storage & Transportation

  • Store in hermetically sealed aluminum tanks or drums made of corrosion-resistant/carbon steel in closed, dry warehouses equipped with supply and exhaust ventilation.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, moisture exposure, and co-storage with strong oxidizers or acids.
  • The product belongs to Hazard Class 3 (moderately hazardous substance, toxic if swallowed). Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when handling.
  • Transportation is permitted by all modes of covered transport in strict compliance with dangerous goods regulations.
  • Guaranteed Shelf Life: 1 year from the date of manufacture.
