Povidone-iodine (PVP-I)

Povidone-iodine is a complex of iodine with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), appearing as a yellowish-brown to reddish-brown amorphous powder with a slight characteristic odor. It serves as a potent broad-spectrum antiseptic. Unlike elemental iodine, this complex is readily soluble in water and alcohol, features low toxicity, and does not cause a stinging sensation upon application, making it a vital component in modern medicine and veterinary science.

Applications

Medicine: Production of antiseptic solutions, ointments, suppositories, and bandages for treating wounds, burns, and surgical sites.

Pharmaceuticals: Used as an Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) for throat and mouth disinfectants.

Veterinary: Prevention and treatment of skin infections in animals, as well as disinfection of livestock equipment.

Hygiene: Inclusion in antibacterial soaps, shampoos, and surgical hand scrubs.
