Methyldiethanolamine (MDEA)
General Chemistry

Methyldiethanolamine (MDEA)

Formula: C₅H₁₃NO₂ GOST/CAS: CAS: 105-59-9

Methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) is a versatile tertiary amine widely recognized as a premier solvent in the gas processing and refining industries. It is a clear, colorless to pale yellow liquid with a faint ammoniacal odor. Unlike primary or secondary amines, MDEA offers unique selectivity in removing hydrogen sulfide from gas streams containing carbon dioxide, making it an essential component for high-efficiency gas sweetening plants.

Applications

Gas Processing and Treatment: Extensively utilized as a selective absorbent to remove hydrogen sulfide in the presence of carbon dioxide from natural, associated, and shale gases. It significantly minimizes operational costs during the desorption process.
Oil Refining (Refineries): Deployed in treating tail gases resulting from hydrotreating, hydrocracking, and catalytic cracking processes, as well as within amine regeneration units and sulfur recovery systems (Claus process).
Ammonia and Hydrogen Production: Applied for the deep bulk removal of carbon dioxide from synthesis gas, ensuring the ultra-high purity of the final product and maintaining the long-term stability of synthesis catalysts.
Chemical Synthesis: Functions as a vital raw material and intermediate polyfunctional agent in manufacturing polyurethanes, textile finishing chemicals, corrosion inhibitors, and surfactants.

Key Advantages

Store in a dry, cool, well-ventilated warehouse facility in tightly sealed original packaging or dedicated airtight storage tanks, away from heat sources, open flames, and strong oxidizing agents.
Recommended storage temperature range: +15°C to +40°C. Prevent the product from freezing (pure MDEA has a freezing point around -21°C, but its viscosity escalates rapidly when exposed to cold temperatures).
Protect against direct sunlight, moisture ingress, and prolonged exposure to ambient air (to prevent oxidation and carbon dioxide absorption). Storing under an inert gas (nitrogen) blanket is highly recommended.
Transportation is permitted via all types of covered transport (chemical road tankers, ISO tank containers, or covered trucks) in strict accordance with liquid chemical transportation regulations. Shelf life is 1 year from the date of manufacture.

Storage & Transportation

  • Store in airtight containers in cool, dry, and well-ventilated storage areas.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight, heat, and open flames.
  • Transportation is carried out in accordance with the rules for transporting non-hazardous or low-hazardous goods (depending on the concentration).
