Construction Chemistry

Butyl Acrylate (Butyl ester of acrylic acid)

Formula: CH₂=CHCOOC₄H₉ GOST/CAS: ГОСТ 16426-81 / CAS 141-32-2

Butyl acrylate is a colorless, transparent liquid with a characteristic sharp, ethereal odor. It is an essential monomer (an ester of acrylic acid and n-butanol) widely used in the chemical industry for the synthesis of various polymers and copolymers. Due to its high reactivity, it easily undergoes polymerization, so an inhibitor is added to ensure stability. Butyl acrylate acts as a key component in the production of acrylic dispersions, paints and varnishes, adhesives, and sealants. Incorporating this monomer into a polymer chain gives the final products excellent elasticity, low-temperature flexibility, as well as high water and weather resistance.

Applications

Paints and Coatings Production: A base monomer for creating water-dispersion (water-based) paints, facade varnishes, and enamels.
Chemical Synthesis: Copolymerization with methyl methacrylate, styrene, and vinyl acetate to produce plastics, synthetic resins, and rubbers.
Adhesives and Sealants: Production of various adhesives, construction sealants, adhesive tapes, and self-adhesive films.
Textile and Paper: Used for creating impregnations, fabric finishing, treatment of natural and artificial leather, and improving paper properties.

Key Advantages

Excellent Elasticity: Provides polymer films with exceptional flexibility and crack resistance even at low temperatures.
Weather Resistance: Ensures durability, UV resistance, and aging resistance of the final coatings.
High Reactivity: Easily and effectively enters into copolymerization reactions with a wide range of other monomers.
Water Resistance: Significantly improves the moisture resistance of paint and varnish materials and adhesive joints.

Storage & Transportation

  • Store in cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouses at temperatures not exceeding 25–30°C.
  • Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, sources of open flame, and static electricity (flammable substance).
  • Store in strictly sealed containers, necessarily in the presence of oxygen, as it is required for the effective action of the added inhibitor (to prevent spontaneous polymerization).
